Chapter Forty-One
âLook, Terry,â Rae Nell said into her phone, feeling her temper rise and knowing she had to keep it in check. âWeâre both adults here. If you had or even have a relationship with that woman, itâs really none of my business. I mean, I get it, no big deal. I just wanted to know, thatâs all. We should be able to trust one another and, well, you can imagine my surprise when she showed up with the exact same âone-of-a-kindâ coat as mine, thatâs all. I mean, maybe she was your earlier sales rep. I donât know. God, she even had that same little leather tag with the number one on it.â
Taggert rolled his eyes, and thought, âGod damn it,â then heard his voice weaseling.
âLook, sheâs a bit of a flake. Her husband got wind of our line of furs and put some pressure on one of the other board members to get a coat for an anniversary or birthday or something. Let me see now. I think the monograms were done by the same company, same style, maybe even the same colors, but the similarities stop there. Well, except for the damn little tag. Now, yours is actually the first. Hers, well, itâs just the first one purchased, thatâs all. The coat you have is a much higher quality, worth about twice as much. Just donât tell her.â He laughed then waited for Rae Nell to pick up on the good news.
She didnât.
âSo, when I repeated a line to her last night that you always shout when youâre about to consummate our little get-togethers and she knew what I meant, I should ignore that, too? Was it just a lucky guess? Because she certainly looked like she knew what in the hell I was talking about.â
âJesus, baby,â he scrambled, deciding to try another path and cursing all women for remembering such trivial things.
âI really appreciate the work youâre doing for me. Thatâs why I gave you that top-of-the-line, one-of-a-kind coat as a bonus. I thought you would be pleased. If youâre unhappy with it, hell, go ahead and return the damn thing. I want our business and personal relationship to continue. But youâve got to understand, Iâm an international businessman. Iâm involved in a lot of deals, got irons in a lot of fires, baby. Even if this was the first, it probably wonât be the last time you run into someone whoâs worked with me or someone who wants to pretend they worked with me. I get that all the time.â
âIrons in the fire? Work with you? Is that what itâs called? Gee, I guess Iâll have to update. I trusted you. I thought we had something specialâ¦â
He didnât hang-up. He just put the phone down and walked away.
